It was a bright sunny morning at 8:30 on the morning of April 7th, 2007 as the Stenny Walk Troops met at Links Park.

What is the Stenny Walk? , I hear you ask. It’s a walk, naturally, from Ochilview to Firs Park and there are several drinking establishments to be visited on the way, partaking of an alcoholic beverage in each one. The troops above were ideally suited to the task in hand, we could all walk and drink copious amounts of booze. We also decided, that as we were going to do the walk anyway, we should see if anyone would sponsor us. Forms were designed and we were on the way.The scene was set as we made our way south, in a minibus generously donated by Kenny Black and driven by Mike Gunn-generously donated by Mike Gunn !

We arrived in Falkirk at 10:45, just in time for opening time. In fact the first pub’s doors were already open and we eagerly waited to cross the road to slake our not inconsiderable thirst, until……….the barmaid had a look out the door and saw us, then promptly closed the door. Undaunted we busied ourselves in the bookies and by buying necessary provisions. 11:00 struck and we entered the Carronade, to be greeted by four punters already in the place ! It was a wee bit run down but the first pint went down a treat, on to the next pub then. The Bluebell Inn, which was a strength sapping 20 yards from the Carronade. The smokers amongst us had barely time to get a “dra” before we hit the second pub. The third establishment was a sports bar-yes we had gone upmarket ! Seriously it was some place, 11 snooker tables, 9 American pool tables and more TV’s than you could shake a stick at.As we wound our way to Firs Park, our spirits rose after each pub, we drank by the canal side at Fratellis, drinking in the sunshine as we went. Suddenly we came to The Colonial Bar, which proudly proclaimed itself “A Big Muff Bar”, oh how we laughed-at this time the drink had began to work it’s magic. They must have been expecting us, as we went in to be confronted with a welcome banner-as you can see from the picture below.

Things continued apace and we eventually arrived at our destination----

full of hope, drink and, very shortly, pies and coffees. To round things off nicely, Montrose delivered a reasonably comfortable 2-0 win, and our only casualty had a wee nap in the glorious second half sunshine.

Once all the sponsorship money has been collected, we will have raised just over £1000.00 to go towards the youth development programme at Links Park.

To everybody who sponsored us, to the brave souls who did the walk I would like to say a huge thank you. Special thanks also go to Kenny Black, for the bus, and to driver  Mike Gunn who had to drink various soft drinks while the rest of us got a bit “foo”.

SCOTT CARGILL.

P.S. An Arbroath top was involved as well. I will not dwell on its place in the proceedings.
